Vertebral manipulation is one of the treatments which has proved to be the most effective in literature for reducing pain and disability in patients with low back, dorsal and cervical disorders. It is a technique where, with the patient in a specific position, the practitioner applies a controlled, sudden force to vertebral joints, called thrust. Manipulation is used in different manual disciplines, each involving distinct mechanism of therapeutic action. Nowadays, studies show that therapeutic effects of manipulation are likely to derive from a neurophysiological mechanism. Therefore, the therapeutic effect would not be produced by the mechanic action exerted on tissues through the maneuver, but the maneuver itself would represent a huge quantity of proprioceptive input for SNC, which would react producing beneficial change on articular and periarticular tissues treated.
