Instrumental physical therapy is the branch of rehabilitative medicine which uses electromedical equipment as to exploit physical energy; it can also be used in association with other manual therapies. It is an effective tool to provide treatment for men and women suffering from muscle, articular and tendinous diseases. Moreover, it is used by high-level athletes.

Electrotherapy

It uses devices which produce electric currents as symptomatic therapy. There are various types depending on the current: T.E.N.S., faradic, diadinamic and exponential electrotherapies. They are mainly used for: pain management, stimulating vascularization, lessening  vascular smooth muscle tone, accelerating metabolism, strenghtening muscles and favouring absorption of edema and articular effusion.

Iontophoresis

Thanks to continuous, constant electrical current produced by a generator, active anodized and undissociated principles penetrate the body through the skin (transcutaneous administration); it could be defined as an injection “without a needle”. These active principles can produce hyperemizing, analgesic or anti-inflammatory effects.

Lasertherapy

LASER is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It is used for treating pain of different origins, variously located, in phlogistic pathologies of tendons and soft tissues (tendonitis, bursitis, enthesitis), insertional pathologies, superficial joint pain; as adjuvant therapy in ulcers, bedsores, in cicatricial forms and in edema treatment.

Magnetotherapy

It is a therapy based on the application of specific low intensity magnetic fields of variable frequency, it has an effect on cells improving their function thanks to an increased use of oxygen. It is particularly recommended in inflammatory pathologies (arthrosis, neuritis, phlebitis, tendonitis) and rheumatic pathologies, in pathologies secondary to recent trauma, in repairing ulcers of various type, and in osteoporosis

Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasounds are acoustic vibrations with frequency higher than 16.000 Hz, and intensity between 0.2 and 3 W/cm2, not audible to the human ear and spreading as compression and decompression waves, transmitted through a transducer head which, held perpendicularly to the affected site, is placed on the patient’s skin, where a conductive gel has previously been applied. They are aimed to enhance tissue metabolism and cell activity, increasing blood flow due to vasodilatation, capillary permeability, pain tolerance, fibrous tissue extensibility and elasticity. Immersion ultrasounds are applied when surfaces are too restricted or so painful as to avoid direct contact.

Shock waves

Shock waves therapy is a non-invasive method, largely used since it creates a highly effective antalgic action ( which may depend on the efficiency of equipment used and the practitioner’s expertise as well), allowing to reduce anti- inflammatory and painkiller use; it can be widely applied, it is well tolerated and  presents no significant contraindications. Shock waves are recommended in pathologies, either in acute or chronic phase, mainly related to tendons (tendinopathy) and bones, and, more often than not, they may avoid recurring to surgery.

Tecartherapy

It is a highly innovative technique, which employs low intensity frequency (0.485 Mhz) delivered through two different electrodes, depending on the tissues to be treated. It works in a non-invasive manner, stimulating energy directly from inside the body and enhancing the activation of normal cell processes. Tecartherapy treatments, conveniently modulated by the practitioner, can produce three different types of reactions inside the treated tissues:

  • microcirculation enhancing
  • vasodilatation
  • temperature increasing

These reactions allow immediate results in patients suffering from muscular, articular and osteoarticular disorders, either acute or chronic, restoring suitable psychophysical conditions in people daily experiencing physical stress (e.g. Low limb heaviness).

Pressotherapy

It is a procedure based on performing a certain pressure on peripherical limbs of the patient. The treated areas are normally limbs and abdomen. Pressotherapy works simulating a manual massage, favouring liquid outflow, relaxing contracting muscles and thus helping fast dissipation of lactic acid, due to intense physical activity. Every athlete is well aware of the precious help these features can provide for demanding practice and high-level performances.
